Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is a visual, non-verbal language used by the Deaf community to communicate.
Students at Heathcote Primary School participate in an Auslan lesson weekly as part of the school's specialit program. Lessons are led by a trained Auslan teacher and classroom teachers participate alongside students.
Students develop communication skills through games, viewing recorded children's stories and events in their daily lives. Students are able to develop an understanding of Deaf culture and reflect on the relationship between language, culture and identity.
